Levi “Cityboy” Jackson was born June 30th, 1982 in St. Louis, MO.The youngest son of five children, City Boy excelled in sports at an early age and by age nine had been named most valuable player in football, baseball and basketball. But growing up in Walnut Park could test the focus of any youth in the neighborhood and Cityboy was no different.By the time he reached Mehlville Senior High school, he’d witnessed the shooting of his best friend, resulting in paralysis and had lost another close friend to suicide.Cityboy still strived, excelling in football, which earned him a scholarship at Hutchinson Community College, in Hutchinson, Kansas.
It was in Kansas, where Cityboy embraced hip-hop and also gained the name by which he is most popularly recognized. It was also there, where he teamed with Randy “Wat Wat” Watson, a fellow student interested in music and hip-hop and they formed the duo “K-Stl.”“K-Stl,” or “Kansas to St. Louis” took heavy influences from popular artists of the day, including Goodie Mob, Scarface, Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. and with the support of peers, became an instant, local success. With the release of their second self-titled album, K-Stl was offered a contract with a major record label in Youngstown, Ohio.Though the contract was never signed, Cityboy used this impetus to form his own label in 1999, now known as Ganga Records. With the support of his brothers, Steel Bill and Big C, he was able to pursue his musical genius full-time, while also remaining true to his first love, football, as head coach of the Matthews-Dickey Super Bowl Champion Bulldogs.
Back home in St. Louis, Ganga Records pulled together a roster of thirteen artists from both St. Louis and Kansas. It was the first home to the local group, “Slu Cru” as well as 106th&Park hall of famer, “Big Will.”By 2002 Ganga Records had released two compilation albums, followed by, “The Life of a G,” an album created with his brother.Individually, Cityboy released his first, solo, self-titled album, grossing over 60,000 units sold independently.
Cityboy is a renowned performer, with countless opening acts for major label artists, such as: Choppa, Mystical, Nelly and many more.It was in 2002 when he joined forces with long time friend and R&B sensation, Future Mic, to create the dynamic duo that Ganga Records encompasses today.Since the historic union, the two have collaborated to create a “Ganga” music that appeals to young and old, with the ingenious combination of Hip-Hop and R&B.
Shot in 2005 and nearly losing his life, Cityboy is a true inspiration to many, striving to teach tolerance and leading youth away from the hypnotizing appeal of street life. With the release of the mixtape, “2 Kangs+2 Albums+1 Mixtape=5 Mics,” the duo have created yet another hit, sure to appeal to the ears of many.Cityboy calls his first single, “Gicha Good,” the new sound of Hip-Hop.With the track produced by Killa Squad, the hypnotic drum line has dynamic changes leaving you charged. This allows the hook to come in every four bars; with his raspy voice infused with the repetitive drum line, ultimately a new style and sound of music is born.
Cityboy is currently chief engineer at Upbiss Studios in St. Louis. He has just finished recording his most recent album, “Kang Middle,” produced by himself, Future Mic, Killa Squad and Soulja B and is professed as being the King of the Mid-West.As a symbol of his excellent networking skills, the album also includes collaborations with local and national artists, including Ruka Puff, Potzee, Leroy Jenkinz, Nikel Yo, The Apostlez, Heat and Future Mic.
Triumph over tragedy a constant theme and with God first, this gentlemanly, genius looks forward to giving more of himself to the music industry, his community and the world.
